The Knight and the Dove
The Story of Victoria "Smokey" Simmons and Dallas Knight ("Dolly" to his older sister Jennifer). Smokey, the daughter of the legendary Clancy, grew up on her father's ship climbing the riggings, fencing with Darsey, the first mate, and learning all there is to know about running a ship. When she was 20, her father bought the Aramis and at 23 she began captaining it. Her father died when she was 25 leaving her the ship, his connections, an extensive knowlege of ships, and knowledge of a personal faith in God.
At a wedding, Smokey meets Jennifer and her husband Tate. Jennifer and Tate take to Smokey instantly and offers her a ride home. When asked, Smokey tells them that she owns a ship, but nothing of her captainship or heritage as Clancy's daughter. Later Jennifer sends an invitation for Smokey to come visit, but Smokey is already abroad, sailing again. When she returns, she accepts the invitation and goes to stay with the Pembertons for a little while.
While staying with the Pembertons, Smokey meets Buck, Jennifer's older brother and Dolly, her younger brother. The ironic thing is, Buck is anything but Buck-like and Dolly is anything but Dolly-like. Buck is a man who is small of stature -- barely bigger than smokey herself -- with a friendly nature and a good heart and is deeply in love with the widow Greer Ritterhouse. Dolly is Dallas, a tall, blonde man with a small hoop earring who captains the Zephyr and by nature of his good looks has his pick of the local women, but remains a bachelor.
Smokey, not very comfortable in social settings, embarrasses herself by spilling, dropping and clattering everything related to eating and cannot seem to speak or function in a normal matter with him in the room. Miserable, she leaves early and heads out to sea.
Smokey reveals her identity as Smoke, the captain of the ship that moves mysteriously beats every other ship to cargo & is the envy of the seas, when some cargo brings her business dealings to Tate. He tells Jennifer, and Buck figures it out on his own and states his knowledge when out to lunch with Smokey. Dallas has his suspicions when he sees someone on the docks that looks like a twin of Smokey's in male clothing, but has doubts when he once again sees her klutziness at the dinner table. Sticking both feet in his mouth, he asks in a rude manner and humiliates her. She leaves the room and his older sister Jennifer tears into him for his awful behavior. Tate tells her to settle down since she is pregnant and sends her to check on Smokey. He then talks to Dallas, very unhappy with how he handled things.
The next day Dallas seeks her out and apologizes. He also asks if he can sail with her, explaining a dream of rebuilding the family shipyards and building ships again and his wish to study the Aramis. Smokey agrees and takes him on as a cabin boy. Dallas, still skeptical, thinks that Darsey, her first mate runs everything. Darsey tells her that once again he is being given more credit than he deserves and Smokey is disappointed in Dallas. Dallas finds out with startling clarity that she is indeed captain in every sense of the word and fully competent after a huge storm & witnessing her in action.
Once again he knows he has to apologize, but decides to show it in his change of attitude and actions while working for her from that point on.
